What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant that is found in abundance in the two outermost layers of your skin. However, blame it on age, UV damage or pollution, this powerhouse starts depleting with time, leading to a dull, lacklustre complexion.
Benefits of Vitamin C
- Offsets daily damage caused by UV rays, air pollution, and other environmental stressors
- Accelerates the production of collagen and elastin which helps keep your skin firm
- Inhibits excessive melanin production which further aids in preventing dark spots and hyperpigmentation
- Evens out skin tone and brightens your complexion without altering normal skin pigmentation
Things to keep in mind while using Vitamin C
- It brings out your skin’s natural radiance, but also makes your skin cells more sensitive to sun damage. Even more reason to not skip a broad-spectrum sunscreen!
- Do not invest in a Vit. C infused formula that is sold in clear bottles. Look for one that’s packed in an air-tight, opaque vial, and preferably one that comes with a dropper.
- Store your Vit. C products away from direct sunlight to retain its potency. Also, keep an eye out for possible signs of oxidation — change in smell, colour and consistency of the formula.
- It doesn’t work well with certain skincare ingredients — benzoyl peroxide, niacinamide aka Vit. B3 and retinol aka Vit. A. So, space out the use of such elements to a possible skin reaction.
- Different skincare formulas contain a wide variety of concentrations of Vit. C, ranging from 5% to 30%. Pick one that works best for your skin. Those with dry or sensitive skin should stick to lower concentrations. However, check with your dermatologist for expert validation.
Natural sources of Vitamin C
Apart from carting Vitamin C superstars in your beauty haul, also try making space for these natural sources of the antioxidant on your plate. For good, glowing skin, these fruits should be in your basket — oranges, strawberries, papayas, lychees, kiwis, guavas and lemons. Amongst your greens, you need to befriend at least a few of them like broccoli, kale, spinach, parsley and thyme.
