What Is Microdermabrasion? Here’s What To Expect

Hi everyone!

If you’ve recently started your skincare journey or thinking of opting for expecting facials, you should definitely read this blog about microdermabrasion. Think of it as a better option than physical extraction of debris, blackheads and impurities that don’t cause damage to your pores when used by a professional. Microdermabrasion is not invasive and a very gentle cosmetic procedure.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Think of it as a cosmetic procedure where you deep clean your skin & neck without any pain. It should be done by a nurse, aesthetician or a cosmetic dermatologist. Microdermabrasion usually starts by cleansing the skin after which you get rid of blackheads, impurities, excessive sebum with the help of a handheld device.

There are broadly 3 types of microdermabrasion: diamond tip microdermabrasion, crystal microdermabrasion & hydradermabrasion. I personally haven’t tried crystal microdermabrasion, but I have seen videos: the handheld device secretes a sandy textured powder which helps exfoliate the skin. Diamond tip microdermabrasion doesn’t have any sandy texture crystals and is used to exfoliate the skin with the tip followed by a masque.

I quite enjoy this step when I get my Hydrafacial every 2 months because that is a signature treatment in which you actually feel something hydrating (like vitamins, acids, peptides) is even infused simultaneously with different tips.

Again, it doesn’t hurt. You can take my word for it because I have a very low pain threshold. Your skin is vulnerable after any treatment so apply a calming moisturiser followed by sunscreen.

Benefits Of Microdermabrasion

There are many benefits of microdermabrasion. However, many times, that’s the first step in a facial. You can follow that up with a peel or a treatment at a dermatologist’s office.

  1. Deep cleansing of face and skin
  2. Softer, smoother skin
  3. Increased cell turnover
  4. Boosts collagen products
  5. Removes makeup residue
  6. Lightens acne scars with sessions
  7. Helps with milia

Should I Use An At-Home Microdermabrasion Device?

Three months ago, I would have said yes. But then I saw horrible videos on Tik Tok of people’s faces swollen up or breaking out because of using an at-home vacuum device thinking they could do it themselves. I would say…leave microdermabrasion to the experts. To control the speed and the depth of the vacuum as well as to do a good job, you need training…so leave it to the experts.

What To Expect

I have sensitive skin, so I get red very quickly. There have been some reports of minor swelling or stinging too. Apply sunscreen religiously after a peel or a facial.

I hope this post helps you plan your beauty treatments and facials! Thanks for reading.
