Using nuclear power for airplanes is a concept that has been explored in the realm of advanced aerospace technologies. The idea revolves around developing aircraft that are powered by nuclear reactors, allowing them to fly for extended periods without the need for refueling or landing. This concept is often associated with the term “nuclear-powered aircraft” or “nuclear-powered airplanes.”

Nuclear Reactor Propulsion:
Instead of traditional jet engines that rely on burning fuel to produce thrust, nuclear-powered airplanes would utilize a nuclear reactor to generate the necessary propulsion. The nuclear reactor heats air to high temperatures. The heated fluid is then expelled at high speeds through a nozzle to produce thrust, similar to the principles behind jet propulsion.

Extended Flight Durations:
The key advantage of nuclear-powered airplanes is their potential for extremely long flight durations. Since nuclear reactors can generate a continuous and ample supply of energy, these aircraft could remain airborne for extended periods, potentially weeks or even months, without needing to land for refueling.

Safety concerns are a major challenge in developing nuclear-powered aircraft. Nuclear reactors contain radioactive materials, and any failure or accident could have severe consequences. Nuclear reactors and their associated components can be heavy, which can impact the aircraft’s overall weight, efficiency, and performance.
Adequate shielding is required to protect the crew and passengers from radiation exposure. The use of nuclear power in aviation raises legal and regulatory challenges due to the potential risks involved.

The concept of nuclear-powered aircraft was explored during the Cold War, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. The United States and the Soviet Union conducted research into the technology, but significant technical challenges and safety concerns led to the abandonment of the projects.
Recently, the Sky Cruise concept was proposed by a Yemeni engineer Hashem Al-Ghaili. Sky Cruise would run on clean nuclear fusion energy, which would allow it to remain above the clouds for several years.

While the concept of nuclear-powered aircraft remains intriguing, it faces numerous technical, safety, and regulatory hurdles. Currently, there are no operational nuclear-powered airplanes in service. The aviation industry primarily relies on conventional jet engines and alternative propulsion technologies for aircraft.

It’s important to note that this concept has been largely considered impractical due to the challenges and risks associated with nuclear reactors in aviation. The complexities of nuclear power, safety, and the existing efficiency of conventional aircraft propulsion systems have led to limited practical development of nuclear-powered airplanes.

Veritasium Is Wrong The Energy Probably Flows Through The Wires. Quantum Field Theory Says So.



A couple of weeks ago Derrick Muller of the YouTube Channel #Veritasium made a video asserting that the electrical energy in a circuit does not flow through the wires but through the fields. This is true and yet also a misleading misconception. This misconception in his problem arises because it deals with a circuit loop that reaches from the Earth to the Moon and back with a one-meter gap between the wires. He also uses a definition of the light being “on” which seems to be having any minuscule amount of current flow through the bulb. Then he justifies this will completely correct classical, non-relativistic electromagnetic theory. When in reality to address the problem, he asked fully would require Quantum Field Theory (QFT) or more specifically Quantum Electro Dynamics (QED).

NASA’s Curiosity Rover Turns 10: Here’s What It’s Learned (Mars News Report Aug. 5, 2022)



NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover set out to answer a big question when it landed on the Red Planet 10 years ago: Could Mars have supported ancient life? Scientists have discovered the answer is yes and have been working to learn more about the planet’s past habitable environment.

In this Mars Report, Curiosity Deputy Project Scientist Abigail Fraeman provides an update on the rover’s capabilities a decade after landing in Gale Crater. Now, Curiosity is heading to an area that may help answer how long ancient life could have persisted on the Red Planet as Mars went through significant changes in the climate.

Some of the images in the video include color enhancement that exaggerate small changes in color from place to place in the Martian scene. This makes it easier for the science team to use their everyday experience to interpret the landscape. For instance, the sky on Mars would not actually look blue to a human explorer on the Red Planet, but pinkish.
