The 2006 romantic drama which features Amrita as Poonam, a girl from Madhupur, a small town in the heartland of India who gets married to Prem (Shahid Kapoor). It touches upon the traditional concept of ‘arranged marriage’ where a couple’s alliance is fixed through their parents. The movie depicts how Indian families bond through traditional ceremonies and get so involved when a couple ties the knot.
The film already has a record of being telecast almost every weekend on television owing to its great popularity. It released on Netflix on Thursday and within a day it was trending on the streaming platform, much to the happiness of the actor.
The actress, who has a girl next door image, says, “At a time when people are all going through so much stress at different levels, it is important to find joy in small moments of life which the film is also all about. I’m glad that now a universal audience is accessible to our great culture through this platform.”
“Vivah continues to be a very special film for more than many reasons. Whether it was the issue of colour discrimination or class difference, the film had a lot to say it its own way,” Amrita adds.
Vivah marks the last Silver Jubilee film of Indian Cinema and though the film did not win a single film award that year in any category, Amrita won the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Best Actress Award. Legendary Painter M.F. Husain watched Vivah 11 times in the cinema hall in Dubai and also declared Amrita as his muse 11 years after Madhuri Dixit.
What has also added to Amrita’s joy is the double whammy that her Vivah song “O JiJi” recently crossed 200 million views on YouTube.
Directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, Vivah was reportedly the first Indian film to release on the Internet on the same day as it hit the big screens.
